The Diving Bell and The Butterfly Lesson

Aim: How could we understand the mindset Jean Dominique Bauby goes through by each day?

Quick Write: What's one food dish you haven't ate in a long time? Close your eyes and imagine it right in front of you. Can you taste, smell, feel the food dish?

Today's Activity: Students will choose to read "The Diving Bell and The Butterfly" by Jean Dominique Bauby together or individually. Create a Mind Map using our notes of what we already know and what we will read on pages 23-39 of the text. We should be able to identify and define words that we don't understand.

Here's my Mind Map

Reflection: From what we read pages 23-39, What can you tell about Jean Dominique Bauby's Mindset of memory? Is his memories taunting him or helping him?

Animal Mind VS Human Mind = No Difference

Preparing for my lesson plan

Quick Write:   One of the most important memories I have is the last time I visited Dominican Republic. The last night I stayed there my family and I were sitting in the backyard telling stories/jokes. We ate a bunch of food like morro, chicken, spaghetti, goat meat, and different salads. It was a wonderful memory that every time I think about it makes me want to go back to it. If  I had that memory taken away I would not see Dominican Republic the same way as I do now.

It's FRIDAY

Quick Write: In my opinion the most productive way to read and study a book is when your interest is all on the book and you have outside information based on the book. For example to understand a book you should have outside information to understand the plot and characters of the book.

Back From A Little Break

Quick Write: What does imagination mean to you? How important is it? What about memory? Can you have one without the other? Imagination means visual pictures of what we think. This is important because with imagination we can understand things and picture things in our minds.  Memory helps us remember our past and experiences. I don't think you can have one without the other because their both as important to our brain and minds.
Reflection: Jean Dominique Bauby's mindset must have been difficult for him to analyze his thoughts. He had so much going on in his head that I don't understand how he was able to write a book. Bauby's mindset must have been growth because it was difficult for me to write a sentence I cant even imagine him writing a book with a blink of an eye.

Quick Write for the Day

Quick Write: I think animals have souls because animals can show their love to their owners and to other animals. For example, dogs and cats have their ways of showing their emotion to their owners by playing with their owners. Also dogs and cats show their excitement when their owners arrive to their homes.

Slow Day

Not-So-Quick-Write:
Evaluating my self on the five activities which are peer edit on our argument essays, strengthened our final drafts, and participated in a Socratic seminar. Also started a new unit, connected some essential questions and quotations to the literature we will read, and finally reflected on the impact of the neurological condition known as locked-in syndrome. Based on these five activities I rate myself a 4 because I did make my essay better and participated in the Socratic seminar. I connected questions and quotes without a problem. Also I caught up with the syndrome of Jean-Dominique Bauby which is locked in syndrome. As a class we watched the video and learned about Jean-Dominique Bauby's story.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Quick Write: Personally there are three people in my life that make my life worth living which is my mother , my nephew and my boyfriend. My mother always pushes me to do better and helps me become a better women. My nephew is the reason for my smile, he makes me smile and makes me think of how many opportunities are in this world. My boyfriend has my back, he is always there for me when I need him and knows better than to make me upset.

3-2-1: Based on the video I completed a 3-2-1 of observations, questions, and reaction or emotion.
Observation 1: He cant talk but still is involved with his family.
Observation 2: He can move his eyes only.
Observation 3: He communicates well for someone who has his syndrome.
Question 1: How does he talk through the computer?
Question 2: How locked in syndrome happen?
Reaction 1: He is brave for still wanting to live knowing he has this syndrome.

Final Reflection: Referring to my quick write, making life worth living in general is becoming a different person making your life count on this world. Life can get difficult but knowing to how you can make a difference in someone or everyone's life can mean a lot to a person. Everyone wants to live and change something or become someone better. This relates to mindset if someone doesn't want to live or doesn't find a reason in making life worth living they have a fixed mindset. However those who want to make their lives better and make their life count have a growth mindset.

Second day of April

Quick Write: Interpreting the novel im reading, "How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents," by Julia Alvarez. Growth and fixed mindset is shown in this novel. The dad of the Garcia family, Carlos shows a growth mindset by deciding to move away to survive with his family instead of living in a country with a dictatorship.

Final Reflection: Theodore Roosevelt once said, "It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed." I agree with this quote because when someone puts effort into a goal they can either fail or succeed. But when the person fails its hard for them but not as hard for someone who didn't even try. Effort given into a challenge can help to whether fail or succeed. Based on the book Hunger Games this can relate to it because Katniss had struggled to survive the hunger games with her partner Peeta. They gave their all to survive and put so much effort that they eventually won the hunger games.
